The exact product matters

The same active ingredient can appear in products with different indications, strengths, delivery devices and instructions. Semaglutide, for example, is used in distinct authorised products. Tirzepatide products also have product-specific indications and labelling.

Compounded products are different

A compounded medicine is not the same as an approved branded product and is not reviewed through the same pre-market approval process. US regulators have reported dosing errors and adverse events involving compounded semaglutide and have warned about products using semaglutide salt forms.

What to verify

Record the prescriber, dispensing pharmacy, active ingredient, concentration, container, device and written directions. Online claims such as “same as” or “generic” should not replace verification by a regulated clinician or pharmacist.

Useful information to track

  • Brand or compounded status
  • Concentration and dosage form exactly as labelled
  • Prescriber, pharmacy and dispensing date
  • Lot, expiry and storage instructions
