Fertility is a couple-level outcome
Difficulty conceiving can involve either partner or both. Male assessment usually includes medical, reproductive and sexual history plus semen analysis, with repeat testing or specialist tests when appropriate.
One semen result is not a verdict
Sperm concentration, movement, shape and sample conditions vary. An abnormal result often needs confirmation and interpretation in context; a normal result does not exclude every male factor.
Disclose hormones and medicines
External testosterone and anabolic steroids can suppress sperm production. Other medicines, heat exposure, smoking, alcohol, infection, surgery and general health may also matter. Do not stop prescribed medicine without clinical advice.
Useful information to track
- How long conception has been attempted
- Semen-test date, abstinence interval and complete result
- All medicines, testosterone, anabolic agents and supplements
- Previous pregnancies, surgery, infections and specialist appointments
