PCOS is a syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome can involve irregular ovulation, clinical or biochemical androgen excess and polycystic ovarian morphology. Other causes must be excluded, and not everyone has every feature.
It affects more than periods
PCOS can influence fertility, skin and hair, metabolic risk, sleep and emotional wellbeing. The 2023 international guideline also highlights weight stigma and the importance of shared decision-making.
Management follows the person’s goals
Priorities may include cycle management, contraception, fertility, acne or excess hair, metabolic health and psychological support. Lifestyle care and medicines are selected around those goals rather than a universal PCOS programme.
Useful information to track
- Cycle dates and bleeding pattern
- Symptoms such as acne, unwanted hair or scalp hair change
- Blood pressure and clinician-requested metabolic tests
- Fertility or contraception goals and follow-up
