The medicine effect does not become permanent
GLP-1 medicines influence appetite and metabolism while treatment continues. Stopping does not mean everyone has the same outcome, but the biological drivers of weight regain can return.
What research found
In the STEP 1 extension, participants regained a substantial proportion of the weight they had lost during semaglutide treatment during the year after withdrawal. This was a study-level average, not a prediction for an individual.
Plan before changing treatment
Stopping because of side effects, pregnancy planning, cost, supply or a change in health should be discussed with the prescriber. The plan may include follow-up, nutrition and activity support, monitoring of diabetes control, or a different treatment. AEVLI should record the agreed change rather than propose one.
Useful information to track
- Final administration date and reason for change
